Chimney Level 2 Inspection

A Level 2 chimney inspection is the most comprehensive standard inspection defined by NFPA 211, and the one most likely to reveal conditions that a basic Level 1 visual check would miss. It's required when there's been any change to the chimney system — a new or replaced appliance, a change in fuel type, or any event that may have affected structural integrity such as a chimney fire, severe weather event, or seismic activity. It's also the inspection standard required for real estate transactions and following any period of extended non-use. Mesa Splendid Chimney Service's Level 2 inspection covers everything included in a Level 1 — visual examination of all readily accessible exterior and interior components — plus access to areas including the attic, basement, and crawl spaces where the chimney passes through, and crucially, a video scan of the full flue interior. The video scan is what distinguishes a Level 2 from a Level 1 in terms of diagnostic depth: it reveals the condition of the liner throughout its length, identifies cracking or joint failure in sections of the flue that cannot be seen from the firebox or the chimney top, and provides documented visual evidence of the flue's condition at the time of inspection. Our Level 2 inspection concludes with a detailed written report covering every component assessed, the condition finding for each, any video footage highlights relevant to the assessment, specific recommendations for any deficiencies found, and a clear categorisation of urgency for each recommendation. This report is produced to the standard appropriate for insurance purposes, real estate transactions, and regulatory compliance documentation. On-site within 2 to 3 hours. (602) 932-9339.

Chimney Tuckpointing

Tuckpointing — the process of removing deteriorated mortar from chimney joints and replacing it with fresh, properly specified mortar — is one of the most important preventive maintenance services available for a masonry chimney. The mortar joints are the most vulnerable part of any brick chimney structure: exposed to every weather event, subjected to the thermal expansion and contraction of every heat cycle, and gradually eroding over time in ways that create increasingly wide pathways for water to penetrate into the structure. In Mesa's climate, tuckpointing carries specific considerations that a properly trained technician needs to account for. The extreme heat cycles common in Arizona mean the mortar specification used for replacement must have the thermal flexibility to accommodate large-range temperature movement without cracking prematurely. The summer monsoon season creates the particular risk of water entering deteriorated joints during the brief but intense period of heavy rainfall — making pre-monsoon tuckpointing assessment especially valuable for Maricopa County homeowners. Mesa Splendid Chimney Service carries out tuckpointing to the correct standard — mortar removed to a minimum depth before replacement, replacement mortar specified and mixed to match the strength and composition characteristics of the existing masonry, and finished joints profiled to provide appropriate weather shedding. We document the extent of the tuckpointing carried out, the mortar specification used, and the condition of the surrounding masonry in our post-service written report — providing a permanent record that the work was done correctly and to what standard. Response in 2 to 3 hours.

Dryer Vent Installation

A new or replacement dryer vent installation involves more technical decisions than most homeowners expect — and getting those decisions wrong produces a system that underperforms, deteriorates faster, or in the worst cases, creates a fire risk through inadequate airflow or incorrect material specification. The key decisions in a dryer vent installation are duct material, duct diameter, routing length and bend configuration, and termination point design. Flexible plastic or foil duct — often used in DIY installations — is not an appropriate material for dryer vent systems: it's combustible, prone to kinking that restricts airflow, and traps lint in its corrugated interior walls. Rigid or semi-rigid aluminium duct is the current code-required standard, and it's what Mesa Splendid Chimney Service installs. Duct diameter must match the dryer manufacturer's specification — typically 4 inches — and the total equivalent length of the duct run, accounting for bends, must not exceed the maximum specified by the manufacturer for the appliance's exhaust volume. Our dryer vent installation service begins with an assessment of the proposed installation — the dryer's location, the optimal routing to the exterior, the termination point, and any structural penetrations required. We design the installation to minimise bends and total duct length within the constraints of the space, select the correct rigid aluminium duct specification, and install the system with all joints properly sealed with foil tape (not screw-type connections that create internal projections attracting lint). The completed installation is inspected for airflow performance before we leave — and fully documented in our written service report. (602) 932-9339.
